2017 has been a pretty exciting year in film! It looks to get even more exciting as summer approaches.
As March draws to a close, I’ve really enjoyed a number of films, most notably the release (in my country) of Hidden Figures in February, a film which I’m sure many of you have heard about during Oscar season.
With imminent releases such as 2 landmark D.C. films (Wonder Woman & Justice League – in November), Pixar’s Coco, as well as likely Oscar-contending films such as Battle of the Sexes and Victoria and Abdul, I cannot wait to dive into this list.
5. Paddington 2
I absolutely adored Paddington. I hadn’t expected to – while I had loved the books as a kid, I didn’t think it would be possible for anyone to capture the unique silliness and acute cuteness of them. Boy was I wrong. The first film was perfect on so many levels – the adorable visuals, the funny yet emotionally charged plot, the amazingly crafted characters – as you can probably tell, my expectations for this are sky high and I’m really hoping it manages to live up to its predecessor.
4. Victoria and Abdul
Stephen Frears is probably my favorite director/producer. The intensity he manages to capture in every one of his characters is enviable, but what makes me love his films the most is that the stories he tell are always refreshing and worth telling, and are told in some of the most engaging and emotionally potent ways possible. Judi Dench coming back to work with him is the cherry on the top for me – Philomena is probably my favorite of his films, perhaps bar The Queen. I absolutely cannot wait to see what story he has to tell this time.
Any Pixar film will always be hotly anticipated by me, and I’m sure by almost everyone else. From the trailer, I did get a very strong ‘Book of Life’ vibe as many have seemed to point out (which I loved by the way), though knowing Pixar, I’m confident they will produce a story that is fresh and original. Oh, and the visuals are to die for as usual.
2. Wonder Woman
D.C. has kind of disappointed me lately, and I know this is not an unpopular opinion – Suicide Squad and Bateman V Superman were kind of underwhelming. I think Wonder Woman can really help D.C. truly find it’s footing. Wonder Woman was perhaps the most iconic superhero for me growing up, and I suspect that is the case for many others too. The trailers have looked pretty amazing so far (but then again so did Suicide Squad’s one), and I can’t wait to see her kick some ass!
1. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
I couldn’t help myself – it’s Star Wars. I know VERY little about it so far, with no trailer or anything really, but this is my most anticipated film for a number of reasons. First, honestly, I just want more lightsabers and Jedi and Stormtroopers. But also, I’m excited to see where Star Wars can go in terms of pushing the limits of film – because it certainly has the potential to do so, with so much behind it. I’m truly hoping for something refreshing and unique – the first felt a little like a rehash of the original Star Wars – critics would even call it nostalgic pandering – so I think this movie can accomplish SO much more. Also, as a side note, I would like to see how they have paid tribute to the legendary Carrie Fisher.
What are your most anticipated films of 2017?
